Palm Cockatoo

Probosciger aterrimus

The Palm Cockatoo is a big black bird with red cheeks, a wild floppy crest and an enormous beak. It lives in and around rainforest and feeds on the insides of really tough nuts. To get to its food it has the strongest beak of any bird in the world.

It lays one egg on a platform of sticks inside a hollow tree. To show that it owns an area a Palm Cockatoo will beat a hollow tree with a stick, sometimes breaking sticks until it gets a drumstick of the right size to make just the sounds it wants.
