Shy Albatross

Thalassarche cauta

The Shy Albatross is almost a metre tall and has a wingspan of over two metres. It is a magnificent flyer, gliding for months at a time above the southern oceans, where it feeds on squid and fish.

Shy Albatross build a bowl-like nest on top of a conical mound made out of mud, bird droppings and any other material available. Most albatrosses will follow boats and ships, taking offal or fish scraps that are thrown overboard, and so are much at risk from long-line fishing.
