Participating NRM Regions

Ten NRM regions in four states are taking part in this study. For more information on each region click on the links below, and for bird lists and final reports in the region download a pdf.

Queensland:
Mackay-Whitsunday
Fitzroy Basin
Burnett-Mary

New South Wales:
Lower Murray-Darling

Victoria:
North East
Port Phillip and Western Port
Glenelg-Hopkins

South Australia:

Eyre Peninsula

Mackay-Whitsunday QLD

Size of region
9000 square kilometres

Key feature of the region
Areas of upland tropical rainforest with adjacent patches of dry sclerophyll forest and woodland which are known to support populations of the Eungella Honeyeater.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to examine the ecology of species which inhabit the rainforest and nearby dry eucalypt forests in the Clarke Range, especially in relation to current and past grazing regimes.

Target species
Eungella Honeyeater and all other species of birds which inhabit tropical rainforests, dry sclerophyll forests, or both.

Size of region
300,000 square kilometres

Key feature of the region
Wetlands and moist grasslands associated with the lower reaches of the Fitzroy River which are known to support populations of the critically endangered Capricornia subspecies of the Yellow Chat.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to document the distribution and seasonal movements of birdlife in the Fitzroy River delta.

Target species
Yellow Chat, and all other bird species which inhabit wetlands or moist grasslands.

Burnett-Mary QLD

Size of region
88,000 square kilometres

Key feature of the region
Numerous forest reserves and state forests which support a wide diversity of wooded habitats, but many of which are surrounded by private land, most of it farmland, and have been poorly covered in previous surveys.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to investigate the distribution of birds throughout the region with respect to habitat type.  As most surveys already submitted have been conducted in the eastern half of the region, we are hoping to concentrate new surveys in the western half to fill in any gaps in coverage.

Target species
All bird species.

Lower Murray-Darling NSW

Size of region
63,000 square kilometres

Key feature of the region
Numerous billabongs and other wetlands associated with the Murray River floodplain which are inhabited by a variety of waterbirds, and are due to be inundated by environmental water-flows.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to monitor a series of wetlands in the Murray River Basin which are due to receive environmental water-flows to see which waterbirds utilise them over time.

Target species
Waterfowl, herons, ibis and spoonbills, gallinules, Australian Pelican, cormorants, Darter, shorebirds, gulls and terns.

Size of region
19,000 square kilometres

Key feature of region
A fragmented landscape supporting remnant areas of woodland in the form of patches, or linear strips along roadsides or waterways, and some of which are undergoing revegetation.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to examine the birds which occur in fragmented landscapes around Chiltern to monitor the role that patches, linear strips and revegetated areas play in conserving birds.

Target species
All forest and woodland bird species.

Port Phillip and Western Port

Size of region
13,000 square kilometres

Key feature of the region
A severely fragmented landscape around Bacchus Marsh which support remnant patches of woodland, many of which are degraded and undergoing extensive revegetation.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to examine the bird communities of revegetated landscapes of different ages, ranging from one year to 50 years old, in the Bacchus Marsh area.

Target species
All bird species that inhabit woodlands and grasslands

Glenelg-Hopkins VIC

Size of region
25,000 square kilometres

Key feature of region
A large number of wetlands of a diverse nature which support a variety of waterbirds, and many of these wetlands are close to main centres of population.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to document the birdlife which inhabits small wetlands which surround larger wetlands of national significance.

Mallee VIC

Size of region
43,000 square kilometres

Key feature of the region
Large areas of semi-arid woodlands, most dominated by mallee eucalypts, and others dominated by plant species other than eucalypts.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to measure the benefits of reduced grazing pressure in non-eucalypt woodlands to document the bird communities in depleted buloke and native pine woodlands, and to examine the impacts of past grazing regimes.

Target species
All bird species which inhabit dry non-eucalypt woodlands.

Size of region
37,800 square kilometres

Key feature of the region
Severely fragmented landscape supporting remnant patches of woodland, many of which are degraded.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to monitor declining populations of woodland birds in the northern Mount Lofty Ranges to determine their distribution and seasonal movements, and the influence of landscape context.

Target species
All bird species that inhabit woodlands.

Eyre Peninsula SA

Size of region
55,000 square kilometres

Key feature of the region
Long stretches of sandy ocean beaches suitable for nesting by resident shorebirds.

Aims of the project in this region
We aim to examine the effects of human disturbance on beach-nesting shorebirds near settled areas.

Target species
Resident waders, such as Hooded Plovers, Pied Oystercatchers, Sooty Oystercatchers and Red-capped Plovers.
