Maintaining global biological diversity necessitates the effective conservation of wild birds and natural habitats. This in turn depends on acquiring a good understanding of the birds through studying their biology and the ecosystems they inhabit, the monitoring of their conservation status, and the education of the community. However, the great diversity of birds, bird habitats, and the threats they face, mean that their study and conservation must be approached in different ways. Some kinds of birds face particular problems that demand a focus on and understanding of their special needs. Recognising this, Birds Australia has established Special Interest Groups to conduct and coordinate studies and projects on birds, as well as to monitor, and make recommendations on their conservation status. The primary area of interest is the Australasian Region, but birds and their conservation needs are not restricted by political boundaries, and much of the work of these groups has global significance. Joining one of our Special Interest Groups is a way of extending and enriching your interest in, and commitment to, birds and our environment.
Your Involvement
All Special Interest Groups welcome new members, whether you simply want to receive newsletters and other publications to keep in touch with developments, wish to be active participants in the fieldwork of the many cooperative projects, or are willing to act as a regional organiser or take on other administrative tasks. No special knowledge or expertise is required. Your reward will be the opportunity to meet interesting people and birds, and help conserve our rich biological heritage.
