Cyclopsitta diophthalma coxeni
Coxen's Fig Parrot is a sub-species of the Double-eyed Fig Parrot. These birds are small (about 15cm) and plump with very short tails - features that distinguish them from lorikeets.
Coxen's Fig Parrot is critically endangered with a population that probably doesn't exceed 100 mature birds. Their current range lies east of the Great Dividing Range between Port Maquarie in New South Wales and near Gladstone in Queensland. However, within this small range Coxen's Fig Parrot is fragmented into even smaller populations.
These parrots were once thought to occur only in lowland coastal rainforests (which have mostly been cleared), but they are now known from a range of remnant vegetation types - as long as they contain fruiting fig trees. Nests are excavated from the dead limbs of tall trees in or close to rainforest.
According to the Action Plan for Australian Birds 2000, Coxen's Fig Parrot is critically endangered.
